The NILES ZX series combines both continuous generating grinding and discontinuous profile grinding in one machine, providing high-end productivity for large gears and modules. Outstanding flexibility is a core component in the technology of the ZX machine.
All main components of the ZX are made from vibration- absorbing ductile cast iron and the bed is a single unit, providing very high stability for the dynamic technology of generating grinding. The ZX machine needs no special foundation. The rotary table accepts high table loads and is driven by an electrical direct drive, providing positioning accuracy for profile grinding as well.
Two configurations of the ZX machine are offered. One version features a one-piece machine bed and is characterized by a compact design with easy access, especially for manual part loading. The second version is equipped with a cross slide. Rotary table, outer column and dressing unit are mounted on the cross slide. For loading and setup the rotary table is moved out of the working area. The dressing unit is positioned and the dressing process can be carried out at the same time, in order to save idle times. This version is used particularly for heavy and large module gears and automatic gantry loading, respectively.
Several dressing processes are available, e.g. double-flank dressing with simultaneous tip dressing for mass production, or single-flank dressing with separate tip dressing for economical costs on small lots and beyond that topological dressing for almost unlimited modifications and gear types for prototypes.
control and software
The Siemens Sinumerik 840D control system is equipped with an operator-friendly menu-driven user interface, developed by KAPP NILES to match the specific machining requirements. Instructions, e.g. tool change are shown at the control screen. Automatic functions assist in order to choose the right grinding tool and generate it to workpiece and dresser.
An on-board measuring system comes standard with the ZX machine, which allows the operator to determine and adjust for the possible heat distortions - common with very large gears - and adjust the grinding technology as needed. This option also allows the operator to inspect and evaluate the quality achieved without disturbing the clamping – thus shortening set-up times considerably.
